How many accessible porta potties does an event need?

The 2010 ADA Standards, section 213.2, require at least 5% of portable toilets in each cluster to be accessible, and never fewer than 1. An event with 12 units in one cluster needs 1 accessible unit; an event with two clusters of 10 needs 1 accessible unit in each cluster.

This is the legal minimum for public events. We also recommend one accessible unit at any private event with older guests, guests using walkers, or parents with strollers. City permit offices, including Gulfport's, ask how many accessible units you will provide. Confirm the exact count with your permit office or venue. Source: 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design.

What size is a wheelchair-accessible porta potty?

A wheelchair-accessible porta potty is about 7.5 feet wide, 7.5 feet deep and 7.6 feet tall, roughly twice the floor area of a standard unit. The interior gives a wheelchair room to turn. Plan a level pad of about 8 by 8 feet plus a clear approach path.

SpecAccessible unit (approximate)
Width x depthAbout 7.5 x 7.5 ft
HeightAbout 7.6 ft
EntryGround level, wide door
InsideTurning space, grab bars, lowered seat, sanitizer
Surface neededFirm and level: pavement, packed gravel or plywood over grass

We describe these units as wheelchair-accessible or ADA-size. Whether your setup meets the ADA also depends on the route to the unit, so keep the path firm, level and free of cords and cables.

Where should the accessible unit go?

The accessible unit should go at the end of the restroom row closest to the main walkway, on pavement or packed ground. Soft beach sand and wet grass make wheelchair use hard. A sheet of plywood under the unit and along the approach helps on lawns.

Mark the spot before delivery and keep it clear of tent stakes, generators and food lines. See placement tips for every unit.

Questions people ask before they book

Does the accessible unit meet ADA rules?

The unit is built to ADA-size dimensions with a ground-level entry, turning space and grab bars. Full ADA compliance also depends on the route to the unit and the site, which the event organizer controls.

Does the accessible unit have a sink?

No. It has hand sanitizer. Place a hand washing station nearby with a clear path to it.

Can one accessible unit be shared by everyone?

Yes. Anyone can use it, and many guests prefer the extra room, including parents with small children.

Is there an upcharge for an accessible unit?

The accessible unit starts at $325 per event compared with $225 for a standard unit, because it is larger and takes more trailer space.

Do I need one for a backyard party?

Not by law on private property. If a guest uses a wheelchair or walker, it is the only unit they can use comfortably.
