How many porta potties do I need for an event?
You need 1 standard porta potty per 50 guests for an event of 4 hours or less, and 1 per 40 guests for longer events. Add 1 unit for every 4 when alcohol is served and 1 for every 4 when most guests are women or children. Include at least 1 wheelchair-accessible unit.
This is Jonah's planning rule from years of Gulf Coast events. Accessible counts follow the 2010 ADA Standards, section 213.2: at least 5% of units in each cluster, minimum 1 (ada.gov).
Event porta potty chart by guests and hours
The event porta potty chart below shows standard unit counts for 50 to 1,000 guests. For 100 guests at a 4-hour event you need 2 units; for 6 hours, 3 units; with alcohol over 6 hours, 4 units. Counts include 1 accessible unit.
| Guests | Up to 4 hrs | 4–8 hrs | Up to 4 hrs + alcohol | 4–8 hrs + alcohol |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 25 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 2 |
| 50 | 1 | 2 | 2 | 3 |
| 100 | 2 | 3 | 3 | 4 |
| 150 | 3 | 4 | 4 | 5 |
| 200 | 4 | 5 | 5 | 7 |
| 300 | 6 | 8 | 8 | 10 |
| 500 | 10 | 13 | 13 | 17 |
| 1,000 | 20 | 25 | 25 | 32 |
Worked example: a 150-guest wedding with a bar
A 150-guest, 5-hour wedding with a bar needs 5 restrooms. Step 1: 150 guests ÷ 40 per unit (over 4 hours) = 3.75, round up to 4. Step 2: alcohol adds 1 unit for every 4, so add 1. Total 5 units, with 1 wheelchair-accessible, plus 2 hand washing stations.
A 3-stall restroom trailer plus 1 accessible unit covers the same wedding with a nicer guest experience.
How many porta potties does a construction site need?
A construction site needs 1 porta potty for 20 or fewer workers under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51 Table D-1. From 20 workers, OSHA requires 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers, and from 200 workers, 1 seat and 1 urinal per 50. A standard unit has one of each.
| Workers | OSHA minimum | Standard units |
|---|---|---|
| 1–20 | 1 toilet | 1 |
| 21–40 | 1 seat + 1 urinal | 1 (2 recommended) |
| 41–80 | 2 seats + 2 urinals | 2 |
| 81–120 | 3 + 3 | 3 |
| 121–160 | 4 + 4 | 4 |
| 200+ | 1 + 1 per 50 | Workers ÷ 50, rounded up |
The legal minimum assumes weekly service. Jonah recommends 1 extra unit for crews over 30 in summer. Source: OSHA 1926.51. More in the OSHA porta potty guide.
How many porta potties for farm field crews?
Farm field crews need 1 toilet and 1 handwashing facility for every 20 workers under OSHA 29 CFR 1928.110, placed within a quarter-mile walk of where people are working. A 35-person harvest crew needs 2 toilets and 2 hand washing stations.

When should I add hand washing stations?
Add hand washing stations whenever food is served, children attend, or crews eat on site. Plan 1 two-sided station for every 2 to 3 standard units at events with food. A 300-guest festival with 8 units needs 3 stations. Deluxe units with built-in sinks reduce the need.
Questions people ask before they book
How many people can use one porta potty?
One standard unit holds about 200 uses between services. That is about 50 guests over 4 hours or a crew of up to 20 on weekly service.
Is one porta potty enough for 100 people?
Not for a full event. 100 guests for 4 hours need 2 units; with alcohol, 3.
Do kids use porta potties more?
Yes. Children and mostly-female crowds use restrooms more often, so add 1 unit for every 4.
How many porta potties for a 5K race?
Races have a rush before the start. Plan 1 unit per 50 runners, placed at the start area, plus 1 or 2 at the finish.
Does a restroom trailer count as several porta potties?
Roughly, yes. A 2-stall trailer handles about 100 guests at a 5-hour event, a 3-stall about 175 and a 4-stall about 250.
